You want to pursue a career in a field you’re excited about. But if you’re like most people, you also want to go down a path that’s going to provide lucrative opportunities—not just right now but for years (or decades!) to come—and that means choosing a high-paying job that’s in demand today and will continue to be in demand for the foreseeable future.

But how do you know what types of jobs are going to provide those opportunities—both today and five or 10 years down the line? Fortunately, you don’t have to guess. Every year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases employment projections for growth both overall and for each individual occupation over a period of 10 years. Nothing is ever certain—and the most recent projections, which use models based on historical data through 2019, don’t take into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic—but the BLS growth predictions can give you a good sense of the long-term trajectory of a huge range of roles.

Let’s take a look at 15 high-paying jobs that are poised for serious growth over the next decade. For the purposes of this list, we’ve defined “high-paying” as jobs whose median pay in 2020, according to BLS, was above the median household income in the U.S., which was $68,703 in 2019. And “poised for serious growth” means BLS has projected this occupation will grow “faster than average” or “much faster than average” over the next 10 years. (For reference, the average growth rate for all occupations is 4%.)

1. 
Actuary

Median salary in 2020: $111,030
Projected growth rate between 2019 and 2029: 18% (much faster than average)

Actuaries typically work for insurance companies and are responsible for evaluating risk. Actuaries use math, data, and statistics to determine whether their employer should issue a policy to a potential customer—whether that’s an individual or a business—and, if they determine a policy should be issued, what the premium should be. Actuaries make evaluations regarding health, life, automobile, homeowners, medical malpractice, and workers’ compensation insurance, as well as retirement benefits and other investments.

A degree in actuarial science (which focuses on using math and statistical modeling to assess risk) or a related field (such as math or statistics) is a must. Plus, actuaries need to pass a series of rigorous exams over the course of several years in order to be certified to do the job by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) or the Society of Actuaries (SOA).

PR managers accomplish these goals using a variety of strategies, including building and maintaining media relationships, writing press releases, and running “damage control” to minimize the impact of negative press.

PR managers typically have a bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, or a related field—but experience building interest and driving positive press can open doors, even for candidates without a degree. 

CV vs. Resume: What’s the Difference?

While the terms CV and resume are sometimes used interchangeably, there are some differences to know.


The key component of every jobseeker's portfolio is a resume ... or is it a curriculum vitae (CV)? It's not always easy to distinguish between these two similar, yet distinctly different ways of presenting your professional background. While a resume may be the go-to "calling card" for many candidates to send out to recruiters and hiring managers during a job search, the reality is that certain employers, fields or locations may prefer or require a CV.

What Is a CV?

When companies ask for a CV, they're looking for more extensive information and details about your professional background – in particular, about your credentials. These credentials should always include your education, degrees earned, professional training and industry-specific certifications. Depending on your line of work, job level and years of experience, your CV might additionally include sections about your publications, honors and awards, grants and fellowships, professional memberships and associations, speaking engagements and conference presentations, research projects, licenses and patents, teaching experience, volunteering and other business affiliations. CVs also include basic information such as your contact information, skills and job experience.

What Is the Difference Between a CV and Resume?

When you're considering your approach to CV vs. resume, you must have a clear idea of the differences between these two documents, as well as when it's most appropriate to use each. David Wiacek, a New York-based executive resume writer and founder of Career Fixer, notes that the more detailed approach of a curriculum vitae reflects the word's meaning: course of life. He notes that CVs in many countries often include very detailed information about the candidate, even sometimes including birth date, marital status and photos.

"Whereas a resume is a synopsis or targeted snapshot of your professional life that is tailored to a particular job, a CV tends to be a more comprehensive document that captures everything and the kitchen sink: not just work experience and education, but all of a candidate's credentials, licenses, public speaking engagements, exhibits and installations (for artists), publications and so on," Wiacek said.

With that in mind, one key distinction is that while a CV focuses on your professional credentials, a resume hones in on your skills or competencies. Another difference is that the bulk of a resume generally consists of a sequential list of your job experience – starting with your current or most recent position – with shorter sections on your competencies and education. A CV, on the other hand, contains a greater variety of subsections detailing various types of certifications, publications, awards, affiliations and training. A CV is also usually longer than a resume, and routinely stretches for three to five pages, while a resume is often expected to be limited to one page for junior-level candidates and two pages for senior-level candidates.

If you're unsure whether to submit a CV or a resume, be sure to look closely at the job listing or ask your recruiter. Some employers and industries will specify that candidates should submit a CV instead of a resume or vice versa. Certain research-based fields, such as health care or teaching, may prefer or require CVs, not resumes. Resumes, according to Wiacek, are typically used to apply to for industry roles outside of academia (think: for-profit, corporate, nonprofit or even government jobs).

Wiacek advised candidates to always refer to the instructions when applying online. "If the instructions do not specify which type of document is required, chances are they expect a simple resume," he explained. "But do your research – don't leave a great job prospect up to mere chance."

10 Things to Do Before Resigning

The Great Resignation is underway, but don't quit without thinking things through first.



The number of people quitting their jobs reached a record high of 4.4 million in September 2021. Dubbed the Great Resignation, this mass exodus of workers from their positions is directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to some experts.

“Everybody put their career plans on hold for the better part of a year of two,” says Jay Starkman, CEO of Engage PEO, a company providing human resources outsourcing solutions to small and medium-sized businesses.

Now that many companies are returning to pre-pandemic operations, workers may feel this is the time to pursue new opportunities. What’s more, after working remotely for more than a year, many people are looking for greater flexibility going forward.

“The pandemic has made people take stock and decide: Is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?” says Greg Selker, managing director and North American technology practice leader for executive search firm Stanton Chase.

However, before you decide to say goodbye to your current job, be sure to do these things first:

  • Understand why you want to resign.
  • Have a career path in mind.
  • Talk to your current employer.
  • Build up your savings.
  • Evaluate compensation and benefits.
  • Consider company culture.
  • Use paid time off.
  • Find a new job.
  • Give appropriate notice.
  • Get references before you leave the company.

Understand Why You Want to Resign

People typically quit a job for one of two reasons: They are either unhappy with their current employment or they see better opportunities elsewhere.

“Before quitting, it’s worth reflecting on the reasons driving that decision,” says Kim Fulton, employee experience principal with global management consulting firm Kearney.

If you want to pursue a different line of work, changing jobs may be the only way to do that. However, if you are largely satisfied with your current job but would like more flexibility or higher compensation, that may be possible without switching employers.

Talk to Your Current Employer

Once you know why you want to leave, talk to your boss about your reasons. You don’t necessarily have to say you’re thinking about quitting to sit down and discuss whether there may be opportunities for remote work, higher compensation or a promotion at your current organization.

“Employers are really flexible right now because they want to retain their talent,” says Meredith Graham, chief people officer at Ensono, which provides managed services and solutions for businesses.

Have a Career Path in Mind

If you decide it’s in your best interest to change jobs, keep the big picture in mind as you plot your next move.

“It’s not enough to have another job lined up,” says Brandon Ashton, director of retirement security at Cornerstone Financial Services in Southfield, Michigan. “I think (workers) should have a career plan.”

That means thinking not just about your next job but also the ones that may come after that. As you begin your employment search, keep an eye on how a new job will move you in the direction of meeting your larger career goals.

Build Up Your Savings

Demand for employees is strong right now, but if you resign without another job lined up, don’t assume you’ll immediately be able to find a new position. “Realistically, it’ll be a few months, not a few weeks,” Ashton says.

Even if you have a new job lined up before resigning, there could be a gap before paychecks start arriving. Either way, make sure you have enough money in savings to cover a few months of expenses if needed.

Evaluate Compensation and Benefits

Before resigning, compare both your current compensation and benefits to what is being offered by other employers.

It’s a mistake to make employment decisions based on income alone, Graham says. There are many value-added benefits – from health care to retirement fund contributions – that could make it more beneficial to stay in a current position rather than seek out a new one.

Consider Company Culture

Company culture should also factor into a decision to resign. “The experience we have at work goes so far beyond the compensation,” Fulton says.

For instance, some businesses are built on the ideal of collaborative work while others may focus on empowering employees to pursue individual projects. Flexibility, communication and ownership are other examples of principles that may be promoted in the workplace.

Finding an employer with a company culture that aligns with your values can be key to job satisfaction. If your current company’s culture is already a good match for you, that may be reason enough to reconsider resigning.

Use Paid Time Off

Some employers will pay workers for unused personal time or sick days when they leave a job. However, these policies may have caps on how much is paid, and not every firm offers this perk.

If you have paid time off accrued, be sure to use it up before resigning, Ashton suggests. There is no reason to leave money behind when quitting a job.

Find a New Job

It’s always best to have another job lined up before quitting. “Don’t resign and then begin your job search,” Selker says. “Resign when you have an offer in hand.”

Having a job offer lined up also gives you one last chance to do a final comparison between firms to determine which will be the best fit for you, your career and your life goals. Again, look beyond compensation and consider factors such as flexibility, benefits and company culture.

Give Appropriate Notice

Once you’ve decided it’s time to resign, end your employment on a high note by providing verbal and written notice to your direct manager at least two weeks in advance of your anticipated end date.

“There’s nothing an employer hates more than a letter of resignation that says I’m leaving tomorrow,” Starkman says. While you may think you have nothing to lose by simply walking out the door, Starkman reminds people, “Your reputation is irreplaceable, (and) everybody talks.”

You don’t want a negative departure from a company to affect your ability to get a job or reference in the future.

Get References Before You Leave the Company

If you plan to get references from your current employer, do so before your final day. Once you leave, it may be easier for managers to put off writing a letter. What’s more, if your supervisor subsequently leaves the company, there may be no one available to provide the reference.

Above all, employment experts advise workers to leave on positive terms with their employer. “Don’t burn bridges if you don’t have to,” Selker says. That means thanking your boss for the opportunity to work there and avoiding any criticism of the company.

After all, you may discover the grass isn’t greener on the other side and decide you want to go back to your previous job. Graham says that’s something that has happened with more than a dozen employees at her firm who tried other positions and then decided to return to the company. As long as you resign the right way, you too could find you are welcomed back if your new job doesn’t go as expected.
